In this circuit the source hot is at the common on the 3 way switch and 3-wire cable runs from there to the dimmer. The traveler wires run between the 2 switches and 2-wire cable runs from the dimmer to the light. The neutral from the source is spliced at each box to run through to the neutral terminal on the light fixture. The common on the dimmer is connected to the hot terminal on the light fixture.
This receptacle can typically be found in living room and bedroom wall outlets. One of these may be controlled with a switch and/or wired to other receptacles in the circuit. For a 15 amp receptacle like this, 14/2 cable with ground should be used to feed the circuit.
This diagram illustrates another multiple light circuit controlled by 3 way switches. Here the source and the fixtures come before the switches. As with the other diagrams on this page, more lights can be added by duplicating the arrangement between the fixtures.
Two-wire cable runs from the switch output to the hot on the light fixture. The source neutral wire is spliced to the neutral on the receptacle half of the combo device and to the white cable wire. At the light it connects to the neutral terminal.
