This wiring diagram is used for 50 and 60 amp circuits. The receptacle should be wired to a dedicated 50 or 60 amp circuit breaker using 6 awg cable. The 50 amp circuit is required for new installations of some large appliances requiring 240 volts. Two wires carrying 120 volts each can be combined to provide high voltage to heating circuits and one of the 120 volt wires can serve lights or other low voltage circuits in the appliance.
A combo switch/receptacle is handy when you need both, but you only have one outlet box available. Like the split receptacles above these devices makes use of a removable connector between the two, hot terminals to divide the device when needed. When intact and wired to one hot source wire, the combo device can be used to turn a light off and on, while the receptacle will be constantly hot.
This represents a change in the NEC code that requires a neutral wire in most new switch boxes. If you are running a new circuit check the electrical code to understand this and any other updates to the required procedure.
At the beginning of the circuit the hot source is connected to the common terminal on SW1. The neutral is spliced to the white cable wire and then spliced to the neutral terminal at L1, along with the white 2-cable wire running to L2 where it connects to the neutral terminal.
